Colorado has a complicated criminal court system. While state-level charges are prosecuted by District Attorneys in County or District Courts, municipal-level charges are prosecuted by City Attorneys in Municipal Courts.
One might think that municipal courts would only handle minor offenses like jaywalking or public intoxication, but that is not the case. Many Colorado municipal courts also handle serious offenses like domestic violence and theft; and until a 2025 law change some punished those offenses much harsher than their state-law equivalents. Despite this, there is no automatic right to a jury trial in municipal courts, and the evidence disclosure rules are more relaxed than in state courts.
As a former state and municipal prosecutor, Zachary knows how to navigate the municipal court system and defend against municipal charges to get the best result possible. These charges can be much more serious than you realize. Set up your free consultation today.
